Poo ada is a special sweet snack made mainly during Onam celeberation. It can be made on any day, not just during Onam, and have it as morning or evening snack. It is a rice pancake stuffed with sweet filling and steamed in banana leaves. This is also called ela (leaf) ada, referring to banana leaf in which it is made. If you don’t have banana leaves, you could use aluminium foil as well.
Everyone who has a sweet tooth will love this. The pan cake would be thin and the stuffing would be juicy and moist. Let me show you how you can easily make this tasty ela ada.

How to make Ela Ada
Ingredients
Rice Powder – 200 gm
Grated Coconut – 200 gm
Jaggery – 200 gm
Rice Flakes (Red) – 20 gm
Cardamom & Cumin Powder – 1 1/2 tsp
Water (hot) – 1 cup
Coconut Oil – 1 tsp
Banana Leaf / Aluminium Foil
Directions
- Add 200gm of jaggery and 1/2 cup of water into a sauce pan.
- Once the jaggery is melted completely, take it out from the stove. Strain and keep it aside.
- Add 200gm of grated coconut into a pan and dry roast it for 1 minute.
- Add 1/2 cup of melted jaggery and mix well.
- Add 1/4 cup more of melted jaggery and mix.
- Now add 20 gm of rice flakes and mix well.
- Once the mixture starts thickening, add 1 1/2 tsp of cardamom&cumin powder. Mix and keep it aside.
- Make batter by mixing 200gm of rice flour with almost 1 cup of hot water to get the right consistency.
- Add 1 tsp of coconut oil and mix.
- Pour 1 1/2 tbsp of batter on a banana leaf and spread it as shown.
- Spread the coconut mixture on the batter and fold it.
- Cook the ada in a steamer.
- Take it out once it is cooked. It took around 12 mins for me.
- Cook the remaining ada like this.
- Poo ada is ready to serve.
