Payasam, Kheer, is an integral part of Kerala sadya. Sadya is not complete without a kheer. It is served as a desert towards the end of the meal.There would be two types of kheer in a sadya, one made with coconut milk and jaggery and another one with milk and sugar.
In this recipe, I will show you how we can make kheer using chana dal. This is made with fresh coconut milk and jaggery. You can either make fresh coconut milk at home or use tinned coconut milk or coconut milk powder. Kheer with fresh coconut milk will taste better. But, for quick and easy option you can go for tinned or powder.

How to make Kadala Parippu Payasam
Ingredients
Bengal Gram – 200 gm
Jaggery – 500 gm
Grated Coconut – 700 gm
Clarified Butter -1 tbsp
Cashew Nuts – 10-15
Raisins – 15-20
Sliced Coconut
Cardamom & Sugar Powder – 1 1/2 tsp
Water
Directions
- To make 2 cup of thick coconut milk, grind 700gm of grated coconut and squeeze it.
- To make 3 1/2 cup of thin coconut milk, add 2 cup of water to the same coconut. Grind it again and squeeze it.
- Add 500gm of jaggery and 1 cup of water into a sauce pan.
- Once the jaggery is melted completely, take it out from the stove. Strain and keep it aside.
- Cook 200gm of Bengal gram along with 3 cup of water in a pressure cooker until it whistles twice.
- After 2 whistles, take it off from the stove .
- Drain the excess water and transfer it to a pot.
- Add 3/4 cup of melted jaggery and mix.
- Stir it continously.
- Add another 1/2 cup of melted jaggery and mix. Let this mixture thicken.
- Now add 3 1/2 cup of thin coconut milk and mix.
- Let it boil for almost 10 minutes on a medium flame.
- After 10 mins, add 2 cup of thick coconut milk and mix.
- When it is about to boil keep it aside. Do not let it boil.
- Add 1 tbsp of clarified butter into a pan and fry coconut slices.
- Fry cashew nuts in the same clarified butter.
- Fry raisins in the same clarified butter.
- Add 1 1/2 tsp of cardamom & sugar powder into the payasam and mix.
- Add fried coconut slices, cashew nuts and rasins into the payasam and mix.
- Kadala parippu payasam is ready to be served.
