Sago upma or sabudana khichdi is a very popular dish in North India. It is available as street food and is widely eaten throughout the year. It is the dish of choice when an individual observes a “fast” during Shivratri, Navratri or other festivals. This khichdi can be made very easily, and it is very tasty. You can have it as a breakfast dish or a snack or for dinner as well.

How to make Sago Upma
What you’ll need
Sago Seeds – 1 cup
Water – 3/4 cup
Boiled Potato (chopped) – 1
Peanuts – 3/4 cup
Green Chilli (chopped)- 1
Curry Leaves
Coriander Leaves
Cumin Seeds – 1tsp
Salt – 3/4 tsp
Oil – 3 tbsp
Tips
- There are few tips that will help to make this khichdi lump free. The sago seeds are high in starch, so need to wash it 2-3 times and must be soaked in water for almost 6 hours until it become double in size. It is always good to check the soaked sago seeds after 3 hours and give it a mix, and sprinkle water if they are completely dry.
- Cook sago seeds only for 3-4 minutes till it becomes transparent.
- Adding crushed peanuts and sago together helps sago from sticking and forming a lump.
How to cook it
- Take 1 cup of sago seeds and rinse them 3-4 times to remove the powdery starch. Soak them in nearly 3/4 cup of water, just enough to immerse them for 5-6 hours. Mix them after 3 hours, sprinkle water only if the sago seeds are too dry. After 6 hours, sago seeds would be double in size after absorbing all the water.
- Dry roast 3/4 cup of peanuts. Once ready take it off from the stove. Once cooled blend it into a coarse powder.
- Add 3 tbsp of oil into a pan. Once the oil is hot, add 1 tsp of cumin seeds. When cumin seeds splutter, add curry leaves and chopped green chilli and mix.
- Add boiled potatoes and fry it. Add a pinch of salt and mix.
- Add soaked sago seeds and 3/4 of the coarsely ground peanuts and mix. Add 1/2 tsp of salt and mix.
- Mix it continuously saute them for 3-4 minutes on high heat.
- Once the sago seeds turn transparent, add the remaining ground peanut and mix.
- Add coriander leaves and mix.
- Take it off from the stove and serve it hot.
