Mulled wine, also known as spiced wine, is a beverage usually made with red wine along with fruits and various mulling spices. It is a traditional drink made during winter, especially around Christmas time.
I am making this mulled wine using Oranges and apple. If you prefer, you can use mix of berries or raisins. Also, you can vary the spices based on your taste.
Mulled wine taste great when served warm.

How to make Mulled Wine
What you’ll need
Red Wine – 1.25L
Apple – 1
Orange – 2
Orange Zest – 1 tsp
Star Anise – 2
Ginger (crushed) – 1 1/2 tbsp
Cinnamon Sticks – 5
Cardamom – 12
Cloves – 12
Nutmeg – small piece
Sugar – 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp
Ginger Leaf (Optional) – 1
Tips
- To make the spice mix, grind 5 cardamom, 2 inch cinnamon, 4 cloves. Mix 1/4 tsp of nutmeg powder.
- If you want, you can replace 150gm of butter with 80ml of oil. If you are using oil, make sure you beat 3 eggs and sugar first, then add oil.
- While making the caramel, after adding 1/4 cup of water you need the melt the caramelized sugar completely. If you feel you need to add more water just add 3 tbsp. Do not add too much water.
How to cook it
- Chop the oranges and apple. Make sure remove the seeds from apple.
- Add 1.25L of wine into a heavy bottom pot.
- Add chopped oranges and apple.
- Add 1 1/2 tbsp of crushed ginger and 2 star anise.
- Add one small piece of nutmeg and 12 cloves.
- Add 12 cardamom and cinnamon sticks.
- Add 1 tsp of orange zest.
- Add 1 ginger leaf, cut into two. This is optional.
- Mix it well.
- Add 1/2 cup of sugar and mix it.
- Once it starts boiling, reduce the flame/temperature to low-medium and let it boil for 25 minutes. Alcohol content in the wine will be reduced when you keep boiling it.
- Check the taste after 25 minutes.
- For more sweetness add 2 tbsp more of sugar and mix.
- Mulled wine is ready, take it off from the stove.
- Serve it warm.
